As a city centre venue, the New Continental is a bit different to many of the other Devon wedding (videography) venues – but that doesn’t make it any less perfect.  A classic hotel, with modern design and large spaces – couples can also make use of parks and open spaces in Plymouth.

One of the potential drawbacks of city centre venues is that there is limited outside spaces – no ‘grounds’ or lawns of any kind. And this is true – but with Devon having so many green spaces, there’s ample opportunity to get out into a picturesque area. The park we visited with Andrew and Yasmin had green areas, some lovely long walkways between tree-rows, and beautiful flower beds.

One of the reasons this works so well is the visual variety. Not just in terms of colour, but also for lighting. Harsh sunlight can be a problem for stills, and many countryside venues lack shaded or diffused areas – but here you have all the versatility of a maintained park space.

Advantages for wedding video  – HUGE Reception Room

There a number of bars and smaller function areas, but the central room is huge!  There were well over 200 guests at Yasmin and Andrew’s wedding, and it didn’t feel like a squeeze.  There’s a lot of choice in terms of layout, but the space has a big advantage for both wedding video and photo – whether it’s circular tables, long runners, or a head table, there is enough room for placement of cameras that allows for excellent coverage, but doesn’t intrude on guest’s view of the speakers.

In this case, Yasmin and Andrew also made an excellent entrance!  There are two entrances, and the wide open space near the head table – which Y+A used for a little dance as they approached the sit down.

Advantages for wedding video – Party!

A quick turnaround (the team at the New Continental were extremely efficient!) and the room is ready for party time!  The potential dance floor space is massive, and still leaves a lot of seating for guests. Moving further back into the room, the sound from the dance floor is much quieter – which is a benefit to older guests who might prefer some conversation.

The lighting is lovely, and there’s a hidden stage!  If you look at the image above, off to the left (out of frame) is a large curtain – behind which is a stage large enough for a full 5 piece band, with drum kit and PA.  This is great, allowing close proximity to the guests, without impeding on the dance floor space.
